Abstract: Before I explain Wald's existence proof in Section 2, I shall describe in Section 1 the economic background which led Karl Schlesinger and Abraham Wald to the system of equations (W). Then, in Section 3, I shall discuss the impact of Wald's outstanding contribution on further developments in mathematical economics.
